Casualty of Tweet

Another day, another casualty. In any other era except our current technological & global sharing one a person would be either chastised by or guffawed at with his peers for making off color comments. How is it that a person can make a off color remark, not even in verbal form, but in tweet form and have it effect his or her career simply because someone else has had their feelings hurt. Not to mention that some consciousness groups have nothing better to do than to monitor the tweets of people they do not like for the sake of creating a furor.

Wow am I tired of people and consciousness groups constantly whining about the remarks of persons in the media! Everyone who watches CNN knows that Roland Martin has no class and sticks his foot in his mouth regularly.

Over the last year, several examples have come to my attention, the most recent is this one.

Example: Roland Martin, how many people witnessed the Superbowl? How many people listened to the commentary? How many people followed the tweets of the commentators? How many people don't care? How many people do care? OK, how many people went to the Superbowl Party? How many people were outraged by anything said at the party? Anyone have an answer? Anyone? .......How about .0003% of the national population!

CNN discussion of Roland Martin's Tweets

Political or Social?

It seams to me that this is more of a political situation than a social one. 7500+ people signed a petition to remove Roland Martin from being seen on the Media for CNN. Why not sign a petition to have him banned from Tweeting? He did not make verbal comments, did he? I watched the game on national T.V. Was I oblivious to something said? I don't think so. And why remove or restrict him from anything? He did not threaten to do anything personally. He made some stupid tweeted comments. Period.

...............That's about .0003%! Of the U.S. population!.........

Kobe Bryant arguing with the referee
Kobe Bryant arguing with the referee

Kobe Bryant, April 12, 2012

Kobe Bryant, not exactly your most inauspicious of players. Already known for hard charging and receiving technical fouls. Spouts a juvenile comment in a petulant voice and directed at the referee. Did the referee sue Kobe Bryant for defamation of character? No, did you hear anything in the media in regards to that? No. You heard about GLAAD being upset. No children's advocacy groups were named in any articles I read at that time. No parents groups raised a stink. Even the referee's own union was not concerned regarding the comment. And yet he was fined $100,000 by the NBA for his slur.

Global village or busybody?

It seems to me that the world is no better for this evolution of technology. When I was growing up it was OK for parents to regulate what their children watched or listened to. It seems that people are more concerned about regulating what people say but not about what they watch or hear. If you were not watching they types of entertainment or listening to the types of entertainment in which these types of behavior occurred, you would not be exposed to it. Or would you? The halls of almost every school are fraught with expletives and verbal harassment. Do you ignore what they hear in school but fine those in the media? Is this profiling? I thought that was wrong. Maybe I am wrong.

I grew up in a relatively permissive household. I was a member of a one parent family. My mother worked and rode the bus to and from her job during my teen years. She was frequently absent during a good portion of our day. However, she commented negatively or positively on any circumstance that arose during the times we were together.

We had to be tougher then than today, I guess, and put up with comments that were stupid, prejudicial or hurtful. If I sued someone or had them fined every time I heard "McHugie" or "Fatso" or "your sister is a Geek" or "your brother is a Wuss", I swear it would add up to millions. I must admit that I am flabbergasted every time I turn on my computer and another retarded incident pops up in which someone said something and it was so offensive that they needed to be fired or suspended or fined. I am also subjected to constant negativity from the news media. Guess what? That is why I don't watch the news, I just read it and skim over the parts I find distasteful.

I don't feel the need to give them more notoriety by pointing out the things I find offensive. I am positive it is a passive ploy to gain extra media exposure by GLADD rather than an actual country wide offense to this type of incident.

What do you think?

Are people and groups too sensitive to comments and communications?

I could not agree more with your statement about no one caring who hears or watches what, but rather are more concerned about what is said. I agree. It's a tactic to shut people up and sadly, it's growing. I really like the numbers you included. I knew it was a small group but how small was driven home here. This is awesome and I look forward to reading more of your thoughts.
